Earl is a Jack Russel Terrier with a big heart, who cheerfully tugs at the leash on the walk of life with his Ozzie and is the best friend of Mooch in Mutts. He is one of the two main characters in Mutts, the other one being his best friend Mooch.

- [1]Before Mutts was even published, Earl's name was going to be Zero Zero (Zero 0 for short). The comic strip was going to be named Zero 0, too, instead of Mutts.
- Patrick McDonnell got his inspiration for Earl by Snoopy from Peanuts and it's based on his dog that he had, Earl.
